Fiscal
Sponsorships

What is Fiscal Sponsorship?

Fiscal sponsorship is a formal partnership in which an established nonprofit organization provides financial and administrative oversight for a smaller or emerging group. Through this arrangement, the sponsored organization can receive grants and donations under the sponsor’s tax-exempt status while focusing on program development and community impact — without forming a separate nonprofit entity right away.

Fiscal sponsorship is often used by new initiatives, grassroots projects, or community-led efforts that are building capacity and exploring long-term sustainability. It is one of several support options available through the Nonprofit Resource Center, which offers grants, training, tools, and practical guidance for organizations at different stages of development.

Roles and Responsibilities

Under a fiscal sponsorship agreement, the sponsoring organization typically:

  • Manages grant funds and charitable donations
  • Provides financial oversight and reporting
  • Ensures compliance with nonprofit and IRS requirements
  • Offers administrative guidance and support

These responsibilities are outlined in the following resources, which are designed to make expectations clear and transparent:

Fiscal Sponsorship Through LCNI

Fiscal sponsorships supported by La Crosse Area Community Foundation are offered through our affiliate partnership with the La Crosse Community Nonprofits Initiative (LCNI). LCNI provides fiscal sponsorship to emerging and community-driven organizations, offering financial oversight, administrative support, and strategic guidance.

This partnership helps smaller organizations access funding, manage finances responsibly, and focus on their mission, especially during early or transitional stages when capacity is still growing.

Community Impact

Through fiscal sponsorship, LCNI supports a wide range of local projects that strengthen the La Crosse area, including the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, river cleanup initiatives, youth baseball programs, neighborhood associations, and community events such as Rockin’ the Prairie with Brice Prairie EMS. Together, these projects show how ideas can grow into lasting community impact with the right support in place.
