La Crosse Area Community Foundation is conducting a community assessment focused on relationship mapping. The concept of social capital is crucial because it builds a network of support and shared resources across diverse groups. Strong relationships mean better information sharing, opportunities, and resources.
Goal: Community members will have an improved communication channel and increase access to information and resources leading to a more welcoming place.

What are the goals or measurable outcomes from this data being collected?
- Community members will have an improved communication channel and increase access to information and resources leading to a more welcoming place.
- Through the initial community relationships mapping project, we aim to identify where individuals receive their information and who our natural navigators are in the community to better serve the community. This will lead to more individuals receiving information and contacts in a timely and equitable manner.
- We then hope the community of La Crosse will prioritize the hiring and training of navigators.
- Navigators will connect to different internal communication networks. Paying marginalized individuals to serve the needs of their own communities will result in less reliance on untrained volunteer leaders, which will improve the quality and resilience of service channels.
- In turn, organizations that hire navigators will help maintain the relationship with immigrant community members regardless of staff changes. Thus, developing formal relationships and communication channels that can lead to improved collaboration, can produce real benefits for underserved communities.
